Dan Geiger

IT/software is my second career. Originally, I worked in manufacturing in the engineering discipline. I found that progress was slow without a degree, so I went back to school with the intent of getting a mechanical engineering degree.
The second quarter in, I took 3 computer science classes - I was hooked. I found that the CS field was much more intriguing to me, and jumped in head first.

Concurrent with my studies, I interned at a police department as a progammer/analyst (this was an incredibly cool introduction to IT in a very demanding environment). Upon graduation, I went to work for a short-lived start up, then jumped directly to a large software development company, where I have been working for over 10 years now.

I have been fortunate in my experiences. Many people who work for a large software development company end up being very tightly focused on one small aspect - for instance, testing printer drivers or writing/maintaining a library for graphics routines.
I have instead been resonsible for, or a part of, projects such as:
An enterprise wide UI automation test framework, used by over 2000 engineers.
A global web site and service performance measurement system
A Visual Studio extension allowing for use of the IDE on top of external source control.
Service monitoring and reporting systems.
A world class authentication system
Lots of various tools to make software development and testing more efficient.
